Like brushing your teeth, cleansing should be part of your daily routine. You should be cleansing morning and night. We know, we know, it takes up too much time and you just want to go to bed! How on earth will you find 5 minutes in the WHOLE day to cleanse your face?!
Unfortunately, rinsing your face with water does NOT count as cleansing (we’re looking at you, face-splashers). Water alone removes only about 60% of debris from the skin’s surface. Read on to understand why you need a cleanser and how to choose the right one…
Preventing dirt build up
Throughout the day, your face is exposed to makeup (if you wear it) and environmental stressors like bacteria, sebum (oil), pollution, dirt, viruses and dead skin cells. If you aren’t cleaning your face at nighttime, you are essentially going to bed with a thick layer of dirt and grime. That’s like going to bed without brushing your teeth, and that’s not pleasant for anyone!
Removing that layer of dirt and grime at the end of the day also allows your products to work effectively. At nighttime, blood flow is higher, and so absorption and penetration of ingredients is increased. Therefore, not cleansing your face at the end of the day means your actives won’t work, and that’s a missed opportunity to wake up with smoother and clearer skin!
Cleansing also enables the skin to maintain its essential hydration levels. Research shows that the skin’s temperature rises overnight, causing it to lose a significant portion of water. Without cleansing, your moisturizer won’t penetrate the skin, which means you could wake up feeling dull and rough.
Preventing excess oil production
Failure to cleanse is damaging to your pores. Remember that pollution, oil, dead skin cells and makeup are sitting on your face. If you aren’t removing the oil, let alone makeup from your skin, then your pores can become clogged from excessive dirt buildup, resulting in acne, redness or irritation. Your skin could also appear grimy, oily and greasy. Proper skin cleansing clears pores of debris, allowing the sebum oil to reach the skin surface unimpeded; decreasing the chances of a breakout.
Clearing dead skin in the morning
Cleansing in the daytime is important as well! Just because you went to bed with clean skin, doesn’t mean you don’t need to cleanse again in the morning. During the night, your skin is repairing itself, which means in the morning you have more dead skin cells and excess sebum (oil) to clear. Don’t forget to cleanse in the morning so that excess oil production can be prevented.
How to choose the right cleanser
The first step to cleansing properly is choosing the RIGHT cleanser. This doesn’t mean going to the chemist and buying just any cleanser you think will be fine. It means choosing a cleanser that suits your skin type. And to do that, you need to learn what your skin type actually is.
Once you get some expert advice and learn what your skin type is, you can then choose your cleanser. If you have dry or sensitive skin, you should look for a cleanser that is free from additives, fragrances and alcohol content. An oilier skin type is more suited to a cleanser with a lower PH level.
There are so many cleansers to choose from. The delivery type of the cleanser also matters. There are cream based cleansers, which are excellent for dry skin, or foamy gel cleansers that are better for oily skin types. There are also chemical cleansers, which work deeper and contain levels of AHA and BHA to resurface and brighten your skin tone.
